is it possible to put the 3.9 linkage onto the 5.2 throttle shaft? i have searched around... read about other guys saying to put a carb ball stud on, but it looks like the throttle disc might be in a slightly different spot on the v8 tb... if it's just a matter of putting a ball stud in place of the disc i'm cool with that. has anyone done this?

if it's just a matter of pressing the v6 linkage onto the v8 tb i can probably handle that too.

i just replaced my 3.9 throttle cable from an alternator arc out incident (damn neg cable reconnected itself...). those cables suck to pull out of junkyard trucks. both my truck and the junkyard truck i pulled the cable from were covered in some kind or urethane at the firewall. i broke my damn pliers trying to get the damaged cable out of my truck, before i got pissed off and took the dremel to it. so i don't want to change the cable, have had enough fun with that.

tia,

Interesting that I came across this thread. Recently just did a v8 swap into my 2000 Dakota. I have been using the v6 throttle body until today. It has the ball type linkage. I finally got around to cleaning and polishing the v8 throttle body from the donor engine of the swap. I had to swap the throttle shaft but also had to cut the slot for the blades longer inside the shaft. I used just a hacksaw blade to extend the slot. Truck really woke up from the 42mm to 50mm increase of air.

Good to know, thanks! I'm working a v6 kegger over for it at the moment. I may have to swap the shafts, one of the screws snapped when I was trying to remove the blades. I'm going to try to drill it out, but I don't think I can get it out without messing up the threads on the shaft...

I was able to drill and tap the shaft for a 1/4" ball stud just fine though.

Just be sure to smooth out the burrs on the throttle shaft after you remove those torq screws or it'll be a PITA and damage the other tb you're gonna install it in. Good luck!

well those friggin screws really pissed me off...

I got it done yesterday, well almost. I have to try to line up the butterflies a little better in their bores so they don't bind at all and tighten the screws. I might have to take the shaft out again and open the slot some more.

It was a time consuming ordeal. Those screws are a PITA, i don't think they are hardened at all. Every one of them broke in the 5.2 tb I originally planned on using. Luckily the v6 shaft I bought didn't give me any trouble, but the new 5.9 tb I scooped snapped one off, and the only way you're getting the butterfly out with a fastener that small is by drilling the screw right out.

The screws were giving me all kinds of problems going back into the v6 shaft. The friggin threads self destruct and go round when you take them out. I had to run an 8-32 tap through the junk shaft and run the screws I wanted to use through the hole to fix them. Then I ran the tap through the holes on the v6 shaft. This might not even be the right size, it might be some metric size but my screws were compromised and that was the tap in my toolbox that worked on my test specimen so it got the nod. They fit pretty tightly. I put some purple loctite on too. It's stupid screws like this that can ruin an engine.

Also, after hack-sawing the slots larger, I had to hit them with my dremel and a thin cutting wheel to open them up wider. My hacksaw blade didn't open them quite enough. This turned out to be a bit of a frustrating ordeal for me, mainly because of the screw problems. I am justifying this work by telling myself if my little 3.9 can't handle this much throttle body, the v6 one is a direct swap back on. I had more friggin fun then anyone else on here apparently replacing that v6 throttle cable after a freak arc out incident already I never want to do it again.
